Nancy Lee, PNSMA Board President

PNSMA’s annual 2 day Social Marketing conference on December 9 and 10 marked our 8th year to offer this inspirational event, one that was launched in 2012 as a TEDx event.

On Day 1, more than 170 attendees heard speakers from around the Pacific Northwest present inspiring 13-minute talks, each with a behavior change theme and aha moment. Wicked problems and solutions included:

  • Improving Public Health: Cannabis, Hearing Loss Protection
  • Preventing Injuries: Motorcycle Safety
  • Protecting the Environment: Septic Tanks, Alternative Transportation, Sewage Backup
  • Engaging Communities: Middle School Bullying

The first day also included two keynote speeches: “Social Marketing is Launched. A Dozen Actions to Get It In Orbit by 2025”, and “10 Social Marketing Pitfalls.”

Optional Day 2, with more than 70 attendees, opened with a panel discussion featuring 4 Washington State agency program managers who discussed their perspectives on Barriers and Motivators to using a social marketing approach for behavior change programs. The afternoon session provided an opportunity for teamwork to deconstruct and analyze several recent local social marketing campaigns.

The conference follow-up online evaluation survey with attendees will provide insights for an even more inspiring SPARKS in 2020.
