|New Social Marketing Associations in North America|
|Written by Jay Kassirer|
We are delighted to announce that North America now has two regional social marketing associations affiliated with the iSMA. The Pacific Northwest Social Marketing Association (PNSMA) was the first to form and join the iSMA, and now has roughly 125 members. It is separately incorporated, runs yearly conferences and quarterly forums and is in the process of setting up a peer-to-peer mentorship-type program. Its Executive Committee includes Nancy Lee of Social Marketing Services (President), Julie Colehour of C+C (Vice-President), Heidi Keller of Heidi Keller Consulting (Secretary), and Nancy Hardwick of Hardwick Research (Treasurer). For a two year interim period, while the Social Marketing Association of North America (SMANA) has been forming, a portion of PNSMA dues has been going to the iSMA so all PNSMA members automatically become iSMA members and can enjoy the associated benefits. The relationship between PNSMA and SMANA is still being worked out, but it is expected that eventually PNSMA members will become members of the SMANA (and through the SMANA also members of the iSMA). If you live in the Pacific Northwest region of the USA, we encourage you to join or renew through the PNSMA. http://pnsma.org/
After years of discussions, including some that iSMA facilitated, we now also have a North America-wide association – the Social Marketing Association of North America (SMANA). The SMANA was just formed in June, 2016 and already has 53 paid members. It is also separately incorporated, is taking on management of a social marketing listserv and will provide additional North-American benefits and support to its members. As with the PNSMA, a portion of SMANA dues goes to the iSMA, so all SMANA members automatically become iSMA members and can enjoy the associated benefits. The Executive Committee includes Kelley Dennings of the American Forest Foundation (President), Brian Biroscak of Yale University (Vice-President), Anthony Panzera of the US Government (Secretary), and Abigail Fredenburg of Ketchum (Treasurer). If you live in North America (but not in the Pacific Northwest region), we encourage you to join or renew through the SMANA. (http://smana.org/)
Kudos to both of these associations for developing to provide regional assistance and resources to those from North America! I encourage those of you from North America to join and support them, to explore what they have to offer you, and to get actively involved in them yourself.
